In previous years, students used to get their results with subject-wise marks and percentage. We could compare our marks with other students and feel sad or happy depending on if we scored higher or lower.

As many nations had moved to grade and percentile system, Nepal finally saw the benefits of the grading system for marking students.

One of the major advantages of grades is that weak students don’t need to be demotivated as no students are categorized as failed.

Here’s the basic outline of the SEE grading system with GPA and percentage range of the grades used in Nepal.

The range of the Grading Point Average (GPA) is 0-4.

Table of Grades System of SEE in Nepal

S.N. Interval in Percentage Grade Description Grade Point
1 90-100 A+ Outstanding 3.6 – 4
2 80 – Below 90 A Excellent 3.2 – 3.6
3 70 – Below 80 B+ Very Good 2.8 – 3.2
4 60 – Below 70 B Good 2.4 – 2.8
5 50 – Below 60 C+ Satisfactory 2 – 2.4
6 40 – Below 50 C Acceptable 1.6 – 2
7 30 – Below 40 D+ Partially Acceptable 1.2 – 1.6
8 20 – Below 30 D Insufficient 0.8 – 1.2
9 0 – Below 20 E Very Insufficient 0 – 0.8

The above table explains your result as per your grade point.

You can also determine your percentage according to the equivalent interval of percentage.

According to the new grading system, the evaluation of student achievement will be made in relation to the attainment of the specific objective of the course. You earn a grade from each subject and it is recorded on the students' permanent record.

The grading system basically replaces the percentage of the subject and that is the purpose of introducing the grading system in the first place. No one fails in the grading system.

However, a grade below C+ is not considered as good if you want to study in good plus two colleges. So, the student can participate in re-exam to improve his/her grade.

There are total 9 grades A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, D, D+, and E in the grading system of SEE result.

A+ grade refers to “Outstanding” and will be given to students who score between 90  and 100. A is given to students scoring between 80 and 89, B+ to those scoring between 70 and 79, B to scores between 60 and 69, C+ to scores between 50 and 59, C to scores between 40 and 49, D+ to scores between 30 and 39, likewise D to scores between 20 and 39, and lastly E would be given to scores between 0 and 20.

One benefit of the Grading system of SEE is that students are not categorized as fail.

Grading system is just a reference that reflects the result of your marks obtained in each subject. Your average marks of a subject (the marks of Theory and Practical) is calculated and a grade is assigned to the average score.

You can not and should not try to convert your grades to the percentage because there is no definitive formula to do so. However, if you really want to, here's how to convert SEE GPA and grade to percentage and vice versa.

The whole purpose of the grading system is to get away from definitive numbers so we encourage everyone to stop evaluating SEE grades to numbers.

It’s about time we get used to grading system because it’s good for students.

Students can learn for the sake of learning than for the sake of getting higher marks than his friend(s).

In our opinion, NEB should introduce Percentile ranking system rather than percentage range soon in SEE results and SLC (Grade 12) results.
